Longtime Chugiak resident Gretchen Wehmhoff is running for the Chugiak-Eagle River seat of the Anchorage Assembly.
Wehmhoff served as a temporary member of the assembly in 2018-2019 to fill the position left by former assembly member Amy Demboski. During that time she was a strong advocate for Chugiak-Eagle River (CER), stayed involved with the community and worked to protect the Chugiak-Eagle River Comprehensive Plan from bureaucracy and overreach.
Wehmhoff is registered as a non-partisan.
As a teacher, Wehmhoff spent 21 of her 24 years at Chugiak High School coaching Debate and advising the award-winning Pegasus student newspaper.
Wehmhoff coached Hockey at Gruening and with the Anchorage Hockey Association. She volunteered with the Girl Scouts in many capacities, including being a leader and service unit manager in CER. She coached Table Tennis for over a decade with Team Alaska at the Arctic Winter Games and volunteered with the Long Term Care Ombudsman's office.
Wehmhoff has been an active member of the Birchwood Community Council, served as the Chair of the Birchwood CC AWWU/Water district Task Force and as the Chair of the Anchorage Public Transportation Advisory Board.
“Chugiak- Eagle River is a community rich with diverse views and lifestyles. This is my community and I plan to continue my service as an advocate for all of us. We cannot be defined by the voices of a few. We are 40,000 strong in 40,000 ways. It’s important to make sure all of Anchorage sees Chugiak- Eagle River in it’s true light,” says Wehmhoff.
Wehmhoff lived in the Greater Anchorage Area Borough for nine years as a child, then the Municipality of Anchorage after unification. She attended Willow Crest Elementary and Dimond-Mears Junior/Senior High. She started teaching at Chugiak High School in 1988 and in 1995 she and her husband moved to Chugiak.
She has a BA in Speech Communication with a minor in Mass Communication from the University of Denver and a MS in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution from Creighton University School of Law.
Wehmhoff is currently the co-publisher of The Skagway News and an adjunct professor of Communication with the University of Alaska Anchorage. She teaches for the Anchorage School District for a few hours a week.
She lives in Chugiak with her husband, Joe, and their dog Athena.
